I am strictly for free software as opposed to 'open source' and am
part of many women in foss (like ubuntu women), computing, feminism
groups. As far as activities on related libre planet groups is
concerned, I think it is important to understand the utilitarian
interests of potential participants at the local level. I did try to
get a new group up, but others wanted me to work with existing groups.

There are thousands of good reasons for India specific initiatives,
but the middle class has its class specific interests.

Also we all like to work with other global-level initiatives and that
is affecting these.

WFS India is more 'open source' leaning women in software group - we
are not witnessing much on free software these days.
There has been plenty of activity on women related topics in wikipedia
from many parts of India. FSMK has also done some good work.

I coordinate GLUG Kolkata too... these days we have discussions and
less of events for various reasons including political scenario.
RMS is part of our GLUG.
Company related Open source events do happen occasionally in the city.
Major FOSS groups in academia are not moving ahead due to all kinds of
constraints. Then there is this strange dependence on me taking the
initiative ...

We all like to work with other global-level initiatives and that is
affecting all these.
"open source madness" vs "free software sanity" is another problem.
