This is called rationalizing.  Instead of at least deciding not to make the
same mistake twice, we are prone to making excuses for our behavior.  The
FSF has a strong culture of rationalizing.  Self-reinforcing in-groups
indeed survive on rationalizing and are able to develop resistance to new
ideas by signalling acceptance to each other's rationalizations.  These
bargains among humans are quite damaging to the truth and serve to fix the
group coherence into place at the expense of being able to meaningfully
engage with new ideas and information, such as two decades of near complete
failure.
