free music fonts

Hi, I want to write a simple music score editor in java allowing basic 
composition and midi playback.
Do you know where I can get free ( and freely usable music fonts?)
..ps do I need a font for this or would normal images (eg gifs) be ok?  ie 
resizing issues....
