This sounds like a bug, probably with the IMAP server, but 
possibly with Pine. I recommend that you post about this in the 
pine-info list and make sure that you specify:

  * what IMAP server - Lserv uses Dovecot IMAP (I think), 
FastMail uses Cyrus IMAP

  * what are the exact steps to reproduce the bug

Stomping out this bug should be useful to both Pine and the 
Dovecot IMAP (or whatever IMAP) team!
