easy server-side filtering with subaddressing

I'm in the process of helping Beartooth change his email setup 
and this message is one step in that process. Please don't be 
shy about joining in -- this discussion is for everyone, not 
just Beartooth and me!

Because the Pine filters suck and because it makes more sense to 
filter *incoming* messages on your incoming mail server, I 
recommend that Beartooth (and everyone) move as much of their 
filtering to the server as possible.

One of the easiest ways to do server-side filtering is to use 
subaddressing. Since Beartooth has an account at FastMail.FM 
(FM) and FM supports subaddressing, I recommend that Beartooth 
(and anyone else interested) learn about subaddressing by doing 
the following experiments.

Note: To foil the spammers, I'm using the domain example.org in 
the steps below. Replace example.org with your real domain name.

1. Send a message to [email protected]

2. Did the message arrive? If so, which mailbox was it delivered 
to?

3. Use Pine to create a mailbox named 'test' in your FM IMAP 
collection

4. Send another message to [email protected]

5. Did the message arrive? If so, which mailbox was it delivered 
to?

6. Send a message to [email protected]

7. Did the message arrive? If so, which mailbox was it delivered 
to?


Beartooth, please post the answers to steps 2, 5, and 7. Once we 
know this works and you understand how it works, I'll help you 
get set up using some real (non-test) subaddresses.

If anyone has any comments or tips about subaddressing, please 
post them here.
