"[Formatting scroll text |----99%-> |]" in Pine

This morning, every time I hit L in pine on a remote IMAP machine, I get a
message saying "[Formatting scroll text |----99%-> |]" followed by a long
wait -- sometimes so long that I get the tiresome old notes about waiting
for the server, such as "Waited 45 seconds for server reply.  Still
Waiting...]"

I had my folder preferences set to include " [X]  vertical-folder-list"
and changed it. That didn't help. 

So I quit and restarted pine. That didn't help, either.

Pine on the remote machine is waiting for a server on the same machine??

Why has it just started doing this, and how can I cure it?
