Some of that is due to the skills (or lack thereof) of the students and instructors. When I was in school, I often attempted to convince teachers to allow me to use the language of my choice in non- language-specific classes (i.e. classes that were intended to teach concepts rather than the syntax of a particular language) It didn't go over well and I suspect in many cases it was because the instructors didn't know the languages I was working with, and/or vice-versa. Student = Apprentice, Teacher = Master.
