Well for many years now most of my work has made it out as open source
or was intended to be that way.  The driver I am working on for Linux
right now is not open source but I have already managed to get others to
realize how much easier our job would be if it was.  Still higher levels
have issues with it because the company chose a path of having much of
the intelegence in the driver and not in the firmware.  It was a trade
off but would give a lot of information and knowledge to the
competition.  Having said that the driver is also shipped mostly as
source with the protocol engine pieces being the only binaries.

I agree with you on this point only to the level of that is how it is
currently being defined.  That does not need to be true.  It cones down
to voters getting out and getting rid of the payed off people in
congress.  Until that happens you can yell as much as you want.  The
congress critters know who gets them elected and it is not the general
public.

I have been to 3 universities.  Oregon Statue University in the 70's,
Weber State University (Ogden, UT) in the 80's and an MBA from
University of Phoenix in the 90s.  I have been a student several times
and I know it can be tough to make ends meet.  However, if you are
talking about music downloads without paying that is theft.  Like I
said, I think the original time period for copyrights was well thought
out.  It gave the creators, or their agents, a time period to profit
from their talent and/or work.

It has nothing to do with picking on students.  It has to do with making
a living.  Hell it will never happen but I would love to be rich also.
