As a US citizen, you are also covered by the DMCA (Digital Millenium
Copyright Act) which among other things takes away your right to view
the data with your software of choice.  For example, the DVD
decrypting software (DeCSS) was declared illegal because it allowed
users to view DVDs in media players that were not licensed from the
MPAA.

Don't get me wrong, I think the DMCA is an awful law, but you are
imagining rights that do not exist.
