You'd need a VERY long duct run on the roof to get any kind of real "pre-cooling" via conduction. I suppose you could force the air through an air/air heat exchanger but that's usually not very efficient so its not done very often. Our datacenter is on the lower level of the building with two floors of office space above it. We have considered that the heat we generate downstairs could keep the offices warm without burning oil/ gas, but trying actually do that and maintain a balanced system is easier said than done. Free cooling is one of the holy grails of datacenter operation. If anyone figures out a way, please let us know. :-) Drew Linsalata The Gotham Bus Company, Inc.
