RE: co-location fees

That's the wrong way to do business..  they should tell you what they
can offer it to you for and then you can decide if it is worth it.

Having said that, first plan your own battery backup installation,
figure in the cost of the UPS plus batteries over three years, add in
the additional cost they will add for rack space for the battery backup
for three years, add in 15% or 20% for incidental service and
maintenance, ammortize the total cost over three years, and that should
give you a number to work with. If they give you protected power with an
SLA for less than that then you have a decision to make.

You really want an SLA guaranteeing not only power availability but
specifying run time on batteries.

If they are important servers I would consider also racking an automatic
transfer switch and having two power sources from different sources or
different battery backups if that is available.
