A lightmeter is reasonably inexpensive and is easier that etching your  
retinas.

An OTDR would be good if you need to troubleshoot fiber between  
facilities, and can be somewhat pricy.  Unless you are building your  
own fiber, or signing dark fiber leases, your fiber provider will  
probably have an OTDR and use it when necessary.

Also for proper hygiene, you may wish to look at a fiber scope such as  
the Noyes OFS300 or the Westover HD1, HD2, or HD3.

Those will allow you te examine the ends for dirt/debris before use.

Once you see the grunge, you probably would want something such as a  
Cletop Type A Fiber Cleaner.
