The former is easy: as Jon Lewis writes, use what with which you feel 
most comfortable (yeah, that's right; my teacher taught me to never use 
a sentence with a hanging participle, and my government taught me to 
never use a ballot with a hanging chad).

Where I'm coming from:  The last BSD I used for hosting wasn't free, it 
was BSD-OS, before the once infamous but now little-remembered debacle 
wherein it was sold off to WindRiver, who killed it.

Until a year ago we used a homespun FreeBSD router, which I inherited 
when a partner pulled out and I ended up alone in the DC.  But a year 
ago we moved to a simple linux router configuration.  Why? Because I 
never managed that FBSD router, and the guy who did lives in Kansas and 
I felt more comfortable with CentOS (see above, and what Jon wrote).

We host on CentOS, and we use RPM/yum for some software, but our hosting 
stack is managed by a decent (commercial) script called "custombuild" 
which is very configurable.

Perhaps unfortunately, said script is only available with licenses for 
the "DirectAdmin" webhosting package.

(Disclaimer: I'm an admin of the DirectAdmin forum, and I use the 
software, though I have no other connection with the company.)

RAID: as you've seen already, that's a bit more complex.  Whatever you 
do, don't use fRAID.  Use either good hardware raid or, as we do, 
software RAID.
