Did the exact same thing at the company I'm working at currently....
While the switch is functional, I really feel like I got what I paid for!!

I've used Cisco switches in the past, but since buying a HP Procurve switch
(when I was running my own business) - I would recommend the Procurve
managed switches over any competition; period.

I run the genunix.org server, which is in the ISC.org colo facility in Menlo
Park CA, and as a favor to ISC for giving the OpenSolaris project hosting
space/power/bandwidth I sent them a 24-port HP Procurve. They had no
previous experience with the HP switches. I asked them about 6 months later
how they liked the HP switches, and they told me that they deploy HP
Procurve switches (in failover pairs) as standard in all their DNS (root
zone) server locations. I don't think that you could get a better
recommendation than that!??

PS: The HP Procurves carry a lifetime warranty with free software upgrades.
So the cost of ownership is zero. Some enterprising individuals on EBay
figured this out and are selling *defective* Procurve switches - while
telling their customers to send the units back to HP and tell them to "fix
it". Ergo - good prices etc. This info is dated - I don't know if HP is
still honoring this warranty or requesting proof of original ownership etc.
Please post back to the list if you learn anything.

In my case I desperately *wanted* to go with HP procurve - but time/dollar
pressures caused me to go the evil Dell 5448 route. I don't get a
warm/fuzzy with the Dell switch. Sometimes you get exactly what you pay
for.

Regards,
