I think that you are mostly out of luck -- you can try something like godaddy (or most of the other big registrars) and they will show you some permutations on the name, and in a few of the larger ccTLDs too. I know of no-one who checks all, but it would be a simple matter of programming to do 'whois $term.tld', 'whois $term.ac.tld', etc…

Actually, I lie -- there are lots of companies that will do this for you, but they are brand protection agencies, and they charge a pretty penny for this service...
