Is it fast because they are all owned by root or because they are all
owned by the same user?  What if you change ownership to another user?
I wonder if it has something to do with looking up all the user names
in the password file.  How fast is plain "ls" or "ls -ln"?

Not that that answers the question but it may point someone else to
the correct answer.
