That, I think, is the crux of the matter.  Without a clear mandate,
like in Genesis, to go out there and enslave the world for purposes
of human consumption, it has become necessary by those of us with a
conscience to find alternative or at least palliative ways to maintain
our comfort, sometimes sacrificing it, as vegetarians do, for example,
to a loftier objective, of which there is no shortage.

Unfortunately, there has been insistent pressure on all in the "advanced"
world to sacrifice conscience instead, with the self-evident promise that
unscrupulous people get first chance at exploting conscientious ones.
That only a few people are willing to become oppressor is less evidence
that they are inferior (as the marketing would want us to believe)
than that human nature is in fact in great part also human conscience.

Still, the tragedy of the commons is a reality and there will always
be those who can't resist the temptation to build their comforts by
exploiting the world around them as if only they had a right to it.
