One "standard", whois-servers.net, doesn't work because there is no za. whois server and/or data, only co.za., and clients which query whois-servers.net don't query deeper than TLD. This is hardly a standard. It was a nice idea that some people at UltraDNS (or a company that Ultra subsumed) started populating 10+ years ago. I wrote a patch to the OpenBSD whois client to use lookups under whois-servers.net as an alternative to -h, and Theo liked it and insisted that it be the default. FreeBSD picked up the change. I guess others have done so since. > Yes, you should be asking why there is no za. whois server/data. Perhaps that will change in time. If the problem is that we need za.whois-servers.net to be populated, let's just ask Rodney to add it. What should za.whois-servers.net be a CNAME for?
