This is hardly a standard. It was a nice idea that some people at UltraDNS (or a company that Ultra subsumed) started populating 10+ years ago. I wrote a patch to the OpenBSD whois client to use lookups under whois-servers.net as an alternative to -h, and Theo liked it and insisted that it be the default. FreeBSD picked up the change. I guess others have done so since.

If the problem is that we need za.whois-servers.net to be populated, let's just ask Rodney to add it. What should za.whois-servers.net be a CNAME for?
