For domains that don't end in co.za it just says "Incorrect Query" which is a bit cryptic, I would say, for someone typing "whois blah.net.za" and expecting an answer.

That's the problem with non-standards.

As Aragon has pointed out and even tried to patch, whois.coza.net.za:43
is absolutely the wrong place to look for .za information. There is no
better place for .za info, other than the zaDNA web page (afaik).

whois.coza.net.za:43 returns one of four replies:

1. Registered (as in the co.za domain is)
2. Available (as in the co.za domain is)
3. Incorrect Query (as in your query was not for domain.co.za)
4. Please go away for x Seconds (as in you hit the various token bucket
rate limiting checks and you should probably do as asked).

While I'm muddying the waters, can I remind people of
draft-sanz-whois-srv-00 - aka dig +short _nicname._tcp.co.za SRV
