In your opinion, and the opinion of disgruntled recipients, yes.

However the law doesn't support that opinion. It says something completely
different.

You call it stealing, they call it a cost-saving marketing exercise. The
entity empowered to find a solution that satisfies both wouldn't necessarily
provide something that is optimal to either.

You're welcome to keep arguing for the sake of arguing, or you can check and
contribute to my figures. Only hard data will sway the powers that be, and
then only if it makes the direct marketers data look bad.

As to time, I get paid to deal with spam, which includes
- blocking at server level
- mailman moderation for over 100 lists
- submitting spam to a reporting system
- unsubscribing addresses
(sometimes with screenshots, but this is laborious, even on a mac)
- feeding sa-learn new spam
- prepping spam complaints for adjudication, follow-up admin
- various tasks for ISPA's Antispam WG and SpamJam events.

and all in all it's still no more than 48 hours a month.

My personal time (that spam chews up) is only a fraction of that. Maybe only
1 hour a month. Since I'm only a 'techanic' my time is worth roughly
R300-R450/hour (in so far as people are willing to pay that much for small
jobs while negotiating a flat rate for larger ones)

As an engineer with letters behind my name, or some niche expertise, I could
probably get away with R500-R1000/hour. Or if I was a highly skilled
professional (lawyer/doctor etc), R600-R3000/hour depending on intensity of
the task.

The average person probably spends no more than 30 mins/month deleting spam.
This is the cheapest option as it incurs no additional time costs. What is
the average person's time worth? Minimum wage? So maybe R10/month in time
costs if just deleting it.

If you have hard data to support your arguments, please share it so the
necessary parties can make a solid case for opt-in. I'm not defending spam
or spammers - I'm looking to make a strong argument against theirs.
