iWeek 2012: Call for Speakers

Dear Members,

The iWeek 2012 organisers would like to invite interested parties
with presentations relevant to the South Africa Internet industry
to submit proposals for talks at this year's event.

===== Background =====

iWeek is an annual Internet industry conference, co-hosted by the
Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) and UniForum SA, the
.CO.ZA registry operator.

iWeek 2012 is taking place at Crystal Towers, Century City, Cape
Town, from 10-14 September 2012.

This year, ISPA and UniForum are partnering with the .ZA Domain
Name Authority (ZADNA), the Wireless Access Providers' Association
(WAPA), and the Internet Society of South Africa (ISOC-ZA) to bring
a full week of Internet-related activities and events to Cape Town.

iWeek is a free conference, and most of the proceedings are open to
anyone involved in the Internet industry.

===== Call for speakers =====

Talks should be no more than 30 minutes with some time for
questions afterwards. All talks should have notes for publication
afterwards, and if presentation material is to be used, we want to
post a copy of that on the iWeek website for review after the event.
Most talks will be streamed live.

The event will break into three tracks after the opening remarks
and headline talk. You can expect your audience to be highly
competent in their field, as iWeek is attended mainly by the South
African ISP industry and their affiliates. There is no blanket
approach to fill the auditoriums, and we expect a maximum of 100
delegates per session.

===== Tracks/themes =====

We plan to present three tracks to iWeek 2012 attendees:

  * Business trends
  * Legislation and governance
  * Technical advances in the Internet industry

Your talk should ideally be focused on one of these tracks and
possibly lightly touch on the other tracks to keep it relevant.
Below are some details and ideas on what ISP owners and engineers
want to hear.

The **business trends** track is focused on what lies ahead for
ISPs: Where is the business case for an ISP these days, and where
will it be in a year or two from now? Who are the up-and-coming
examples of planning for the future? Build or sell? Financing
equipment through investment or leasing? Diversify or focus? Where
will the "un-capped" frenzy end? Is there space for multiple VoIP
providers, or will we consolidate into three or four major players?
How to provide a CDN at globally competitive rates? How do you
market SaaS to SMBs?

The **legislation and governance** track is there to help ISPs
figure out how to capitalize on markets that are opening up from a
governance point of view such as Whitespace and Local Spectrum.
Where are we going with Privacy, Copyright and Spam? How do ISPs
remain compliant on a budget? 10 Regulatory issues you can't ignore
(or loose your ECNS license).

The **technical advances** track will be delving into the new
technologies that are busy defining the tasks and efficiencies of
today's ISPs. Ranging from the much-hyped Cloud to Billing Systems,
IPv6 to High-speed Fibre, these talks have to provide ISPs'
technical staff with information on subjects that will make their
customers happier and their engineering lives easier. Topics such
as Building the Cloud, turning it into Off-site Storage, or even a
Content Delivery Network. What to do with the insatiable P2P
network demands. How can we provision more cost-effective National
Bandwidth?
