Re: Voice spectrum swapped for LTE

It's easy to blame the network operators because they are your supplier but
have you considered the impact that their supplier has on them.

There is only so much information (whether it is used to carry voice or
data is immaterial) that can be transmitted in a given number of megahertz
of spectrum using a particular encoding scheme. LTE happens to be more
efficient at transmitting data than 3G and HSDPA.

Both Vodacom and MTN have been trying to get additional spectrum allocated
by government for ages. Their networks are using their currently assigned
spectrum pretty intensively in certain areas. Frequency re-usage through
smaller cells and cells within cells, etc can can only be taken so far.

Let's hope government will get a move on and allocate the spectrum. While
they're at it they can try and get the analogue to digital terrestrial
television migration completed.

Then again maybe they are more worried about sorting out Johannesburg and
the many other municipalities across the country that are on the brink of
bankruptcy or already bankrupt and are unable to deliver the basic services
that they exist to provide.

No need to mention the bigger problems which are probably higher priority
still.
