I think net neutrality is important for the consumer, so that "internet access" doesn't start having a wooly definition that is dramatically different between providers. Think "internet access" compared to "internet access minus voice protocols" or "internet access minus Netflix". It is one of the things I hate most about the airline industry, an "air ticket" used to mean a given set on the plane, space for my luggage, and some kind of refreshment en route. Now depending on who you buy the ticket from it could be a seat free-for-all, a rude shock as my luggage costs extra at the airport up to various nonsensical limits, and refreshments ranging from dodgy to none at all.
