I know this makes me sound like the laziest person in the world, but if 
the messages aren't coming into my mailbox, it's 100% certain I'm not 
going to bother following a discussion. The only times I read a forum 
is when I'm trying to solve a specific problem, for which they seem to 
work better than email archives.

Lots of people do swear by forums, though.
