Hmm. It sounds as though you're leaning towards 'blessing' the gmane.org
NNTP mirror officially, rather than setting up your own NNTP server.

I'd consider this to be an improvement over the current situation, but
still sub-optimal, because the gmane.org server will always look less
'official' than the mailing lists, meaning that most people will
continue to interact with the mailing lists rather than the news server,
resulting in the threading on the news server being frequently broken
due to sub-par MUAs replying via the mailing list.

Ideally, I would like to there to be a news.osafoundation.org NNTP
server, which is given top billing (over the mailing lists) on the
www.osafoundation.org website.

Otherwise, if the NNTP server is an afterthought, some of the
significant benefits to having the conversation via NNTP are lost.
