Please have a look at yout /etc/network/interfaces and post it here.
Once pppoeconf is run, and necessary details sent in, you (or any user
who is a member of `dip' group can simply say `pon' to connect.
The console will be free (unlike wvdial).
To disconnect, say `poff'.

Ugh. THis means you have tampered with configuration of eth0, which
was not necessary. So, please post your /etc/network/interfaces

pon brings up the ppp0 interface, which is mapped to eth0 by the ppp
over ethernet programmes.
