If its a new initrd image for the current kernel, then
the above is fine, else you need to specify the
<version> at the end, as in:

mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd-2.4.25-new-kernel.img 2.4.25

This 2.4.25 directory name is the one present in
/lib/modules for your kernel.
