Aw. Cm'on, grow out of the windughs days. It is in the kernel.

Plug it in and it ought to work.

The devfs utility will automatically create the device nodes for your
modem/phone when the usb cable is plugged in, and your problem is most
proably one of identifying the correct /dev/tty* or /dev/tts* or
/dev/ttyUSB* device for use in the connection (ppp/wvdial) scripts.

If, not,

1. make sure that the usb basic modules are in the kernel and the
kernel detects the usb plugging in event just - type in `dmesg` and
try to make some sense of the last few lines.
2. see if you have the devfs and usbutils packages installed. Check
output of lsusb when the phone is pluged it. Probably, you have a
problem identifying the device to which the phone is assigned.

Also see http://www.hackgnu.org/ril-howto.html (for cdma phones, but
mostly valid for gsm phones too).

and http://www.eridani.co.uk/docs/linux-timeport/T280.shtml
In the second article, ignore the parts about patching the
kernel. Just follow the instructions about creating device nodes.

If you still do not get it to work, get back to the list - with output
of the dmesg command.

HTH.
