If u consider Novell part of the free opensource community, yes :)
Mono has already has great many desktop application written with it,
beagle, Blam!, muine,  Tomboy and ifolder are good examples.Mono is
somewhat conterversial in the community because they chose to
re-implement parts of dotNet which are under microsoft patents.
