That is sudo or gksu in action. You are running kde or gonme?

Try running the application from command prompt - like

luser@localhost$ sudo <package> 

and  look at  the error  messages.  (if  the package  does not  open a
window, log  in as root from  command line (`su',  enter password, and
then run the application.)
