Ok; so  the problem might  be what prakash  suggested - or there  is a
chance that dpkg/apt crashed, or did not delete the /var/lib/dpkg/lock
file.

Please check that  directory and its permissions; and  remove the lock
file, if it is present.

Just hoping that you do not  have a separate /var partition and its is
readonly. (unlikely  - you would have  had other problems  if that was
the case)
