Hi!! Mr. Menon, nice to find yet another enthu on localisation. 

It is not that things do not work; they will, if you have the right
fonts and right versions of applications - it has nothing to do with
the kernel.

On Debian, you can install the ttf-indic-fonts meta package which will
install fonts for most Indic languages; and view indic languages in
the Konqueror browser.

Firefox/Mozilla on Other distros display Indic text, including
Malayalam reasonably well. I am not aware of the equivalent of
ttf-indic fonts for other distros - but there is a project canned
ttf-freefonts, which includes fonts from all scripts around the world
- and that includes Indic languages.

The problem with Malayalam is that teh Unicode's standards are rather
hazy in certain crucial aspects. On this, qhave a look at:-

Also, you can subscribe to the gnu-malayalam-discuss, also on the same
server as this (FSUG-Kochi) list - that group has kept its work in
suspension due to the problems outlined in the above documents.

You can also google for the `varamozhi' text editor. Its creator, Cibu
Johhny, has some excellent documentation on the standards problem - do
not have them bookmarked them at the moment.

It is not that you cannot send or receive mail in Malayalam - you
certainly can - all you need to do is to install the appropriate
fonts.

Also, if you are interested in Indic localisation (create versions of
applications for your language / enable support for data in your
script in a language), please have a look at indilinux project -
http://indlinux.org.
