I donot get what you mean by a ``sortable font'', but
googling for UTF-8 will help you find answers.  On
GNU/Linux systems, you should also read the man
page for `locales' and the LC_ALL environment.

Also, OpenOffice has a few rendering buggs, and the
rendering / display may not be exactly to your liking.
