We use Debian in our college in all the labs including the one where we
access the net. If you're looking for current and up to date software
perhaps you can upgrade it to Etch or testing.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu is another option, but the Media players in them don't come
with codecs for MP3. They have to be installed separately. As a whole,
though, Ubuntu is easier to install than Debian.

The Desktop environment selected has an outcome on how good the system
"looks". Just make sure you have some good media player like Kaffeine, a
cdrecording front end like K3B etc.

Personally, I feel the choice of the distro is a very personal one. Hard to
get everyone to agree on one distro. Each has its own merits and demerits.
