That is  because there  are disagreements about  how to  interpret and
implemnt  standards. M$ implements  Unicode its  own round  about way,
GTK/Pango implements  it the straightforward  way, but the  some fonts
follow M$, others follow GTK/pango.

1, Right click on the panel and select ``add to panel''.

2. Scroll down to ``keyboard Indicator'' and select it.
   This will add the keyboard switcher applet to the panel.

3. Right  click on  the panel,  select the  ``layout'' tab  select the
   ``add'' button, go down to the ``Malayalam'' option, and add it.

4. You can input Malayalam by clicking on the keyboard layout switcher
   applet.  It will  show ``USA''  for  ENglish layout,  and Mal  when
   Malayalam is enabled.

KDE  too  has  its  own  way  of  doing this;  and  you  can  use  the
``ctrl+shift+k'' combination to switch between various layouts. I used
to have three - Malayalam, Hindi and English.

If you wish to do translation,  you may have to live with bad rendering
for the time  being; so long as you enter  the correct codepoints, you
will be all right.

BTW, the  chillu characters have  been accepted for encoding,  and the
code points  have to  be finalised. AFAICT,  it will take  another two
months before  chillus are  allotted code points,  and I  suggest that
translation work wait till them. Please  feel free to find me wrong on
this.
