gedit (on gnome) uses aspell as the default spell checker. I am not
sure if you install the dictionary from  source it will work with an
aspell installed by a package manager (like apt/dpkg or rpm). Other
applications like slypheed-claws (email client) and  evolution -afaict
also use aspell.

I am yet to install the dictionary on my own system, which I wiil get
around to doing only in next four or five days. I have to build a
debianised package of the dictionary, and install the .deb  - my
system has far too many valuable profession related data on it to
allow me to play around installing from sources - even if they are my
own ;-)
