There is one thing that i noticed about Rachana font. Its that there is no necessity for these many glyphs. Well I'm not trying to create a flame war here. See, the rachana has been built to work on windows and mainly towards compatibility of softwares such as office apps, wordPad and other dtp tools towrds rachana softaware.
The type of font used is window's ttf format which does'nt have much features. But when we convert to open type the font format gets so many features. Using these features we could drastically reduce the size of the fonts. This not refering to compression technique used but the kerning feature used.
See, the most other glyphs used in rachana are just addition of a single type of glyph to other charecters so that a new charecter is formed. but the kening feature allows us to put that charecter to kern a the particular charecter when a particular base charecter is put before it.
For instance in the subscript 'u' and 'uu' when put after the base charecter in the form of a single round or double round. In old Rachana this forms a new glyph but instead of forming a new glyph, we only need to apply the particular amount of kerning to 'u' so that it will result in base charecter to touch the single round so that it would look like a new charecter.
This same thing can applied to other subscipts like 'ya', 'tra',... and also many other places where two or more base charecters join. Hence we could shed off almost one third of unnecessary glyphs in RachanaOTF.
I have been trying to contact Hussain(author of rachana) for a week about the recent developments but it seems that he is too busy in his research.
This method is effective only if the rendering engine of the font works without errors. Otherwise we may have to shift back to the old method.
