I had a talk with Mr. Hussain on the subject of the otf font. He said that he has started the work on otf. Also I had asked him about splitting the sub conjuncts from the glyphs which have a common conjuncts there by allowing the font to reduce the number of glyphs. His reply was that he had already done that and found that this split would make the otf font more complex and would render it tough for people from other language to understand the font and the basic principle.
The split would make the errors in the rendering engine visible and hence the font would look different in different rendering engines. Keeping the font in its native individual glyphs would make it look same on most of the platform or the inability of the platform otf renderer to do specific things would'nt matter. In other words the font would become cross-platform compatible.
Also he met with many of the typographers and they said they would prefer that in order to build beautiful fonts they would require the glyphs to be unique and they would'nt have to look into the rendering issues and other combinational problems while doing so.
Also there another thing which I think would impress the general people, that is saying that our malayalam font has 900 different glyphs would emphasize how much work that author of the font has done to bring rather than saying that all 900 glyphs could be generated from this font.
Also that he recieved a few helps from certain people who sent him a font in otf with a cut short version of rachana. Please do refrain from making statements that a smaller version of rachana has been built. In his ideology, creating small fonts by removing the charecters that they think were unnecessary would not help improve the situation and he does'nt like such works. So if you have done such works please try not sending him these works.
