I suggest that we use a three column format for discussions like this.

<word> <transliteration> <malayalam>

Here is an example of the format

normal sadharana ??????

This way, even those who have ancient/non-free/nonstandard rendering
systems can understand what is there in the third column by looking at
the second.

I am also aware that there is a iTrans (or something like that) which
maps upper and lower case letters. Thus, ?????? would be represented
using something like saaDHaraNNa or similar. IMHO, this would be a
right-royal PITA. So, we will stick to simple alpha representation.

But, do remember to think of ambiguous spelling, like `manam' as in
`sky' and not `smell'. In such situations, please clarify.

So, here is my 2 paisa worth.

chitta ????? is the word used in GNOME.

Surely, we did not mean ????? (aacharam) or ?????? (chunkam) here. So,
what is the context? If it is customise,

kramam (or should it be cramam as in `cram') ?????

Btw, should we use it ?+ ? + ? or ? + ? + ??

sadharana ??????

pothu ????

Hmm. what is the context?

koottuka ???????
and

cherkuka ??????????

Depending on the context.

> 6.background-=20

paschathalam ???????? (hmmmm..... mark it fuzzy)

7.foreground-

if this the antonym of background, should'nt it be

poorvathalam ????????????

8.shadow

chhaya ???

Was this supposed to be ???? (niram)? ???????? (varnam) is another option=

#3390;മ്

gee ... as in `application for a job'? If so, how about ???????

literal translation - rooparekha ??????

A literal translation - rekha (???) will not help here.

how about `vivaranam' ??????

> 11.comments

Unless you mean those words in program which are not supposed to be=20
visible to the compiler or user, we could have used

'vyakhyanam' ??????????

but for those invisible words, well ....

karyasthan ??????????? (fuzzy)

I do not have a translation here, but `screen' will not do, coz. on=20
posix system, you do a `ctrl+alt+F*', and you get a different display on =

the same screen.

9;്റ്റു്

What is wrong with ?????????????? or its variants?

?????????? is out of question ...

See 10 above.

You can see for yourselves what I can see here. Maybe, your mailer=20
converted the message to 7bit ascii?

PS:- 1. can you sort the English words next time?

2. Is it possible to use HEX notation so that we can look up directly in =

the unicode chart? Alternately, is there a sensible way of converting=20
&XXXX into a unicode code?
