Communications confidentiality, whose breach is represented by Prism and Echelon, has its roots in imperial times, thus predating the modern nation-state. It has been legally challenged in the UK by Privacy International and in the USA by Epic. The EU is in a bit of confusion right now, as it turns out that key member nations have been a treaty part of the legally questionable sigint. Australia and Canada lack sustainable civil society organisations to prosecute similar protests against the underpinnings of the nation-state. In India, we not only lack civil society organisations to challenge such cracks in our framework, but even the legal position has been papered over by unchallenged modernisation of the colonial command-and-control structure, especially in the digital domain (which, of course, as this list has noted for years, and is in fact one of the main reasons this list exists, is the principal structure for global information exchange). This goes well beyond party politics, so if we continue a discussion in search of a solution with which India can live, kindly do not descend to that level. Vickram communicall.wordpress.com Yahoo!
