Thanks for all the suggestions and advice.

Updated firmware , changed the dns etc but status quo remains.

Was going down an elaborate conspiracy route and it seems that frequent
lightenings storms may be to blame.

We lose on Ann average a router a year along with other electrical
equipment through various lightening related surges . The local exchange
shuts shop when thunder is heard . But that Doesn't stop the exchange from
getting fried courtesy the many lines that physically connect it.

Will hAve to continue using this router till a replacement arrives
