COAI argument: OTT (Skype, WhatsApp, ...) have taken away cash cow (voice
calls) and so we need to increase data costs by x6 to stay in business !
Alternatively, the Telco Regulations should apply to them (charging, call
terminations charges, call data storage for x months, police wire-tapping,
spectrum costs, universal service obligations, area coverage, ....)

Remember: Telco is a regulated industry whereas "Internet" is not regulated
at all (there is self regulation but not government regulations).

*Arun *had talked about "policing": Here it is not human police but the
"technical term" as Arun knows - so replace "policing" by QoS whereby
"rouge" packets (corrupted packets, duplicate packets, data heavy packets,
...) are throttled or discarded (!) to provide QoS to all "valid" packets.
This will be required in any Internet and has been there since Day 0 of the
net. What is happening and hence huge discussions: "should this capability
- 128 bits long field - be used for additional traffic management /
prioritisation? In "net neutrality" the answer is "no". However, Arun was
suggesting to get rid of this feature all together - existing in IPv4 as
well - so as to speed up traffic. This is not possible.

*Ruchir*: Remember Moore's Law. What has happened in the last 15 years or
so is the exponential computing power, better codec algorithms, more
bandwidth (remember most had dial up connections or rudimentary adsl-1 if
lucky), etc. This has meant that most work is done at the edge (devices)
and the net does not have to do the extra work. It seems Moore's Law is has
a decade or more to go! So indeed as edge get more computational powers,
you may have added bandwidth hungry features (3D video, ...) and here
5G/FTTH would assist. I have no idea what is the status of the Fibre
rollout in India.

My plea has been that the "regulations" done at TRAI (or Government and
hence politicians) need to be technology independent since the 5G/FTTH will
enleash another wave of disruptive technologies (like remote medical care,
actual road traffic management, ...). And in this future scenario of
10+years, there may be need for better internet traffic management which
may be more than strict "net neutrality" when the projections are that
there will be more than 50billion+ devices connected and 6billion human
beings connected to the net.
