Firstly, this order only amplifies an existing order, of which the government is in continuous breach, and the court has set aside two pending contempt petitions for no reason that makes any sense. The government has submitted verbally that it has advised states not to insist, like, you know, big deal, try and get a driving license, pension update or name/details corrections in the Electoral Commission database, and wonder no more about why brickmaking will always be a sunrise industry in India. But hello, private citizen, cast any aspersion on this Court, or any other, and you will certainly spend some quality time and/or money at our master's pleasure. Secondly, the batch of petitions challenge UIDAI, and are not individually or severally praying for clarifications on privacy. Yet the proceedings have been halted indefinitely on this narrow point. While the murky history of our borders makes me very wary of the term 'national security', the fact is that there are some very dodgy deals involved in this caper. My/our petition lists several. It has not been heard yet, and I am not sanguine. Pardon if I am not a ray of sunshine on this cloudy morning.
