Yes, the old soft shoe. Or, in digitalese, the sneaker-shoe method. 

However, with cities congested in towers, (in Mumbai, nearly half being illegal and unmonitored - unless the Department is actively aiding and abetting illegality), the nearest tower may not actually be delivering the most reliable signal. Reflections and absorptions are functions of topography.

Signal strength as reported by bars on the device is rarely reliable in older devices,  if you can switch the device to engineering mode you can see the actual level in -dbm. Has anything changed in surrounding area such as overgrown tree, new building gone up or crane operation that might affect line of sight to existing base station finally have you dropped the device recently, or could you try swapping to another device. 
Couple of things you could do without having to buy all operator SIMs is check with visitors if they have good coverage with other operators. A service provider with lower frequency allocations such as 900 or 850 may have slighter better indoor coverage than others due to beneficial propagation characteristics at the lower frequencies. 
In the UK we have a sitefinder database-  you enter zip code and a list of base stations in the local area is provided. the database is populated by operators.

Clearly, anyone here can start such a service. Some of us had, while planning a citizen science project for rural areas, actually scoped out for phone users to report on signal strength at the point of observation, as a part of the data transmission. 

It is true that the metric is not deadly accurate. But does that matter, when the database of reports moves into mega numbers? Most dirty data will be smoothed out by dozens of different reporting devices of varying accuracy. 

And, as we know from the Nobel Prize in Economics, dirty data is useful too, in certain circumstances.

Lately I find that the signal strength of my reliance connection varies a lot. Sometimes it is 3 bars and sometimes it goes off. This is at home. I want to switch over to another vendor. How does one find out which mobile service provider has the best signal strength at my house?
I hope you can give me some leads to answer this question.
