Hello, I have several things to mention today. First, just a reminder, our next meeting is Monday, April 5. If you missed the announcement, you can find details at http://www.aclug.org/events/. Now then, on to other matters. SSC is selling some Powered By Linux squares, but only in lots of 50, so ACLUG is going to buy a bunch and let everybody purchase in smaller increments. The Powered By Linux squares are self-adhesive, 1" square metal-backed items with a transparent plastic cover. They are designed to replace a manufacturer's logo that you often find on your computer case, or to be the logo if there's not one there as may often be the case if you build your own computer. You can find a rough photo at http://www.linuxresources.com/pblbig.gif -- but keep in mind that the gray parts are actually showing the metal on the back, and due to how it's made, the shading appears to change color as you look at it from different angles. The price on these is expected to be about 50 cents each and will not exceed 55 cents each. If you are interested, e-mail me with how many you would like. I will bring along a sample to Monday's meeting and also see if anyone there would like to reserve some, so let's say that the deadline to let me know is the 5th. Many people have already e-mailed me after the discussion in ACLUG-L; if you have, you should have received a confirmation from me by now. Meetings will be held in 260 Jabara Hall on the campus of Wichita State University as always. ACLUG events tentatively scheduled in the immediate future include: * ACLUG meeting, Monday, May 3, 1999 MEETING FORMAT REMINDER ======================= One issue that has been somewhat troublesome is making presentations interesting and useful for people with a wide range of Linux experiences. We want our meetings to be useful for as many people as possible, so our plan is this: For those of you that are starting out with Linux, or just interested in what Linux can do, please feel free to join us at 7:00 PM on each meeting date (1st Monday and 3rd Tuesday of each month). We'll cover some basics about the evening's topic or Linux in general, or have an informal Q&A time, depdending on what the people present prefer. Also, if you have any Linux questions (beginning or advanced), we'd like to get to them between 7 and 7:30 so that the evening doesn't get too late for those that have to work or go to class in the morning. Our regular presentation will begin at 7:30 as it always has. Of course, if you can make it at 7, you're encouraged to stay for the whole program. You are welcome to arrive at either 7 or 7:30. LOCATION & MAPS =============== We will hold the this event in the Computer Science Department in Jabara Hall on the main east campus of Wichita State University. ACLUG has assembled some driving instructions on the Web at http://www.aclug.org/maps/. We will be located on the second floor of Jabara Hall. We expect to be in room 260, but we'll be sure to post signs if we need to relocate elsewhere. You'll be able to find a sign on the wall in front of the 2nd floor elevator when you arrive. Our topic will be disaster recovery: what to do when something bad happens, what you can do to prevent disasters, and what you can do to make them less severe. We will plan to talk about things such as how to customize which programs are started when you log in, how to switch to various window managers or environments such as KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, fvwm2, etc, and how to make your desktop look great.
