Re: Next meeting?

I'm running 10.04 with KDE 4.4.4 and it's a good alternative for Windows look and feel-wise. I couldn't get fonts installed globally, but local seems to work fine. Flash seems to crash occasionally in Chromium. Acroreader is doggish. I've got about fifty "media players" installed, and none of them are as good as the good stuff in Windows. Dolphin is not as good as Win File Manager. I wouldn't say it's ready to take on Windows in ease of use, setup. The whole repositories, apt-get, synapse, etc. story is a bit much for your average non-geek still. The basic installation disk gives you McGnome and not much other than a basic set of open ware that is adequate, but not exciting. A beginner would not know what to do next...
Personally, I don't think Linux on the Desktop version Ubuntu 10.04 will excite the average user coming from Apple/Vista/Win7-land. But my history (and no doubt yours too) has me wanting a computer for a whole different reason than as an Internet-juked toy/appliance. For me, Linux is a wonderful Unix workstation. If you come from the distant SGI/Sun workstation past, Linux is a dream come true! So as a 21st-century Unix workstation, yeah, U10.04 rocks hard. And yeah, Ubuntu's desktop efforts make what is essentially a fabulous Unix workstation even better. It's a victory unhoped for. But it's still not something for the average user, IMHO. Still, I think I could finally say that a workplace with good support personnel could make an Ubuntu/KDE4.4 box sing just as good if not better than Win7 for the cubicle people.

I know this list is pretty quiet, but has anybody seen the new Ubuntu 10.04?  the closest thing to usable I've seen.  I put it on my desktop 7 weeks ago when it came out and have not used windows since!  I only wish we could get something to run on the newest exchange.  I am using the web client, as my counter part is windows and just put the new exchange on there, which cannot be run yet.(that is by the evolution client)
