For that kind of trial check out a distro called Dragonlinux. It's based
on Slackware and installs on a FAT32 partition as a bunch of *.img files
in a folder. No repartitioning required. It's the first Linux distro I
used. Loaded it on my laptop and played around with it. To remove
Dragonlinux when you have finished checking out the programs you want to
try, you just boot to Windows and erase the Dragon folder. As far as I
know the only major limitation on it is a max 2 gig partition (*.img
file) size. But once it's running you can "dd" as many 2G *.img files as
your HD's will hold and mount them as directories.
