not sure what happened to the Best Data modem...  when i lived in wichita,
i had 2 outtages (one when all of wichita was out, one when all of kansas
was out)...  once i moved to hesston, everything went to hell...  and i've
lived in two different places in hesston with the same problems...
supposedly the modem is the culprit, but i'm still experiencing some of the
problems i was experiencing before (with his Surfboard)...  i still have
short, random outtages...  but the other problem i was having (the cable
modem losing lock) seems to be "fixed"...  then again, who cares if it is
in lock and i don't have a connection! :P

i replaced all of my cables with fresh cables and replaced my splitter
(more on that in a second) with a brand-new splitter...  we'll see if that
makes any difference...  if it does and everything goes smoothly, i will
swap modems (ie: switch back to my Best Data) and keep testing...

here are two things i find troubling / interesting about the visit from the
cox guy:

1.) after he decided it was a problem with the modem, he was rather rough
with it; practically tossing it around as if i had gotten it for free...
regardless of whether or not it is a problem with that modem, that is no
way to treat someone else's property...  getronics wouldn't even let us use
a customer's restroom, let alone do anything that might damage a customers
property...

2.) he mentioned something about the modem not being able to lock because
the return signal was not getting back to cox...  he ran a test and it
failed (after he had just bragged about how good the signal level was)...
then, he said he was going to try something and swapped the TV and
cablemodem at the splitter... he re-ran the test and it passed 2x...  what
i'm guessing *really* happened was that he happened to catch it during one
of the problem times when it failed the first time and swapping things on
the splitter didn't do a d*** thing... the short outtage was over by the
time he had finished, therefore it passed...  oh well, i replaced the
splitter anyway, so they cannot blame it on any of the cables between the
wall jack and the modem (btw, earlier last year, they replaced the cable
from their box at the apt complex to the wall jack in my apt)...
