An interesting discussion, although much of it was above my head.  
Apparently this happens in more ways than I would have expected.
Seems like I remember having to kill Konqueror in order to umount a 
cdrom.  Konqueror is a bit buggy, I am afraid.

In my case with mcopy,  it was still stuck the next day, so a timeout 
was not going to help.  I shut down everything but the terminal window 
(in KDE) and it was still stuck.  After I shut down KDE and restarted 
it I was able to use the floppy.  Not having to reboot helped me keep 
my faith in the integrity of the linux kernel.
