pppd is not part of the kernel at all.

If I am able to decypher what you're saying, it sounds to me just like a DNS
issue.  Make sure your pppd options file has 'usepeerdns' set as an option.
Alternately, edit /etc/resolv.conf manually and enter your ISP's DNS servers
there.
